the Zolas

Okay I've only heard one song so far (You're too cool) but I'm buying the album as we speak, cause the song is that good ^^ To me it sounds like a mix of Mother Mother and Bishop Allen with a hint of Immaculate Machine (that might be the Canadian part ;) )and maybe a little bit of Mika and the Hush Sound (that might be because of the piano) mixed in :)

Check them out ^^ youtube, myspace, last.fm, wherever :)

Isbells, Amadou & Mariam

Isbells

This Belgian band deserves your attention. You can listen to them for free this week on luisterpaal.fm.

Amadou & Mariam

I'm probably years too late to call this band a 'discovery' but their 'Welcome to Mali' album has been on repeat here all week, they make me very happy.

Things

First of all, the new Tegan & Sara album, Sainthood came out today, and it isn't as bad as I feared. There are a couple of tracks on there that could become new favourites.
Check out "Hell", "Red Belt", "the Cure" and "Sentimental Tune". "The Ocean" is pretty likeable too.

Secondly, I'd like to present to you an old favourite fo mine:

Agnes Kain. I haven't listened to it for a while, but I did a lot in summer of 08. They have some lovely tracks on their debut and only album.

Brandi Carlile

Brandi's new album 'Give up the ghost' is released today! I'm at song number 3 now and it sounds really good to me, like she always does. I feel this album is happier though, less sad & angry & lovebroken then before. Maybe it's just me. It's still music I want to turn up really loud and sing along with. You go Brandi ^^ Just come to Holland next time you visit Europe :) I'm sure lots of people want to see you!

We fell to earth

This picture looks exactly like how they sound. Which is a good thing. I think they sound a bit like Controller.Controller combined with The xx, but more mature. Maybe a little Portishead. Just give them a listen :)

Tegan & Sara

Tegan & Sara in 2005

If you know me a little -or, if you don't know me at all, that's fine too, 'cause I'm going to tell you now anyway- you know that Tegan & Sara have been my favourite band in 2005,2006,2007 and for the first part of 2008. Why the sudden change? They've become sell-outs. Yes. I know how that sounds. I know it sounds all 'Oh I'm so indie and I only like bands no-one listens too', but to me this was MY band. After they released 'the Con' I didn't like the songs at first, but then the title song got me and I was hooked on the whole album. Then, I went to their concert (it was the second time I was about to see them) and I had high expectations. I mean, I was a fan for more then 3 years, knew their songs by heart. The concert was a complete leaddown. I guess they were tired, because it was one of their last shows on the European tour, but damn, they were almost grumpy. No -funny- stories and only small thank you's. And then there was the audience. Full of little lesbian teenage emo's, who only like them because their lesbian too. Or at least that's what I thought (and still think).
And now they are releasing a new album soon. Though I will look forward to the music, and I am going to see them live again, they, as persons, disappoint me. They're also releasing 3 books together with the CD, and you can pre-order a deluxe package now, for 130 Canadian dollars! (and for European costumers, it will be 109 euro!) Who do they think they are? Michael Jackson?
Looking back on their records now I think they were emo before emo existed, but they exploited themselves. Or something like that, I don't really now what I mean. Just want my band back please :( I've always seen them like two twin-sisters who played guitar and had good voices and really good songs. Now they're trying to be so artsy.

Sorry for this rand, just had to get it of my chest.

Gregory and the Hawk

I'm probably years behind by finding this band now, but I fell in love with 'A Wish' and wanted to share this band & the lyrics with you.
Youtube = http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJIf_W_1kBM

Lyrics:
I wish to feel smaller
under your sheets.
I wish for the whole truth
every time you speak.
I'm thinkin' about how you care half as much for me
While I watch you arrive, smoke cigarettes, sleep...

And I guess it doesn't matter what I say or what I seem
You stuck what I felt for you in the pocket of your jeans
Ignoring me the morning after
isn't enough
and I swear I'm gonna cry.
I'm sick of tryin' to be tough.

And my blood won't stick
To the confines of my veins.
And your heart
Is gonna tear mine away.

And I wish to feel smaller under your hands,
though you seem satisfied as you slip mine
down your pants.
And I'm thinkin' about how you care half as much for me
While you lift up my shirt after asking politely.

And I guess it doesn't matter what I am or pretend to be
Cuz it's her you'll always love and it's her I'll always envy.
I want to end this now so dreams of you won't keep me up.
But I swear I'm gonna cry.
I'm sick of tryin' to be tough.

And my blood won't stick
To the confines of my veins.
And your heart
Is gonna tear mine away.

And it's hard to find
What I want
When it's buried beneath the biggest rock.
I could pay lots of money
To help lift it with machines
But I'm not sure you'd cooperate.
Not sure you'd come clean.

And I wish to feel smaller
under your sheets.
I wish for the whole truth
every time you speak.
And I'm thinkin' about how you care half as much for me
As I watch you arrive, smoke cigarettes, sleep.

And I guess it doesn't matter what I say or what I seem
You stuck what I felt for you in the pocket of your jeans.
Ignoring me the morning after isn't enough
and I swear I'm going to cry.
I'm sick of tryin' to be tough.

Yeah, I swear I'm gonna cry.
I'm sick of tryin' to be tough.

And my blood won't stick
To the confines of my veins.
And your heart
Is gonna tear mine away.

Is gonna tear mine away.

Megafaun

Megafaun
Megafaun is an amazing band for the kind of weather it is today. (Think: leaves turning gold, rain hitting the windows and the wind is blowing hard here too.)

Favourite songs of the month

I will try to make this post once a month.

For september, my favourite tracks are:
Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Fields - Home
The xx - Basic Space
Sufjan Stevens - Casimir Pulaski Day

Edward Sharpe & Sufjan Stevens make me happy, just like the pictures on http://abbytrysagain.typepad.com/ , you should check it. Maybe even buy something from her store :)

Basic Space is just stuck in my head, especially the 'It's a pool of boiling wax' sentence.

the Ian Fays

Wow, haven't been here in quite a while! Sorry about that. Guess I'm not as good at writing a blog as I hoped. I've just recently stumbled upon a band definately worth mentioning though, so here we go again.

the Ian Fays
Like last.fm says: "The Ian Fays sound is anchored by the sweet delicate vocal harmonies of twin sisters Lizz and Sara Fay, with Lizz strumming guitar and Sara laying down dainty basslines."

Listen for yourself:
